History of zoos:

Next to the ancient Egyptian temples, a place was reserved to store the animals that would be sacrificed to the temples. The first animal collection in history dates back to B.C. It is accepted that it was built by the Chinese Emperor Vu-Vang in 1100. The Emperor reserved a section in the palace called ” Garden of Knowledge “. B.C. Between 1000 and 400, numerous small zoos were established in North Africa, India and China. In ancient Greece and Rome, it became popular to display animals for the pleasure of nobles.

Zoos in the style of prestige collections of rulers and nobles were called “arslanhane” in Turkish. In the 16th century, there were “lion houses” in Ottoman palaces where wild and predatory animals were protected and trained, and wild animals were exhibited in ceremonies in the palace as an indicator of the Sultan’s power. Animal collections became widespread among European royals and nobles in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, and were introduced by King Louis XI of France. Louis established Europe’s first zoo in the Palace of Versailles in 1650. Inspired by the Palace of Versailles, the animal collection created in the Schönbrunn Palace, founded by Prince Franz I in Vienna in 1752, is considered the pioneer of today’s zoos and continues to be active until today.
