History of Zoos:
Next to the ancient Egyptian temples, a place was reserved for the storage of animals sacrificed to the temples. The first animal collection in history dates back to 1100 BC. It is believed to have been established by the Chinese Emperor Vu-Vang in 1100. The emperor reserved a section in the palace called the “Garden of Knowledge”. Between 1000 and 400 BC, many small zoos were established in North Africa, India and China. In ancient Greece and Rome, it became popular to exhibit animals for the enjoyment of the nobles.
Zoos in the style of the prestige collections of rulers and nobles were called “arslanhane” in Turkish. In the 16th century, Ottoman palaces contained “lion houses” where wild and predatory animals were protected and trained, and wild animals were exhibited at palace ceremonies as an indicator of the Sultan’s power. Animal collections spread among European kings and nobles in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and were popularized by King Louis XI of France. Louis founded Europe’s first zoo in the Palace of Versailles in 1650. The animal collection created in Schönbrunn Palace, founded in 1752 by Prince Francis I in Vienna and inspired by the Palace of Versailles, is considered a pioneer of today’s zoos and is still active today.
